There are prerequisites that must be met in order to become accepted as a member of the South African Association of Mediators. In order to qualify for membership, the following are required:

Criteria for acceptance as an accredited mediator with SAAM
  • Completion of a basic SAAM accredited and/or accredited mediation training course
  • Dependant on the applicant’s primary qualification and experience additional training in family law (eg. maintenance, divorce; children’s issues; cultural issues) mental health (eg. Adult psychopathology; children’s special needs; developmental psychology; step-parenting and related aspects) and financial matters (eg. Pension funds; retirement annuities; investments; trusts; wills) is required.
  • Details of mediation experience
  • A sworn declaration that the applicant has not been convicted of an offence involving a child/ren and/or dishonesty
  • An acknowledgment that the mediator is bound by the Code of Conduct and the Constitution.
  • Duly completed and signed application form
  • Payment of membership fees
Criteria for retaining status as an accredited SAAM mediator
  • Minimum of 10 SAAM CPD points on registration; in the second year of membership 15 points; and there after 20 points per year. A minimum of half of these points must be obtained by way of attendance of recognised information sessions/workshops/seminars/conferences (Training Committee to advise on the value and allocation of SAAM CPD points) See the training section for more details about SAAM CPD points
  • Minimum of 6 mediations per year.
  • Presentation of two case studies to a supervisor/s appointed by SAAM.
  • Paid up membership.
